An Online Love Story

My husband and I will be celebrating our 5th wedding anniversary this weekend on July 1. And I think it's about time that I come clean. The truth is,
This post goes out to all you single girls who might be embarrassed about admitting that you are have thought about looking for love online. I know the feeling.

Little girls don't dream about meeting their prince charming online. We dream of running into him at a bookstore or some other 'meet-cute' like in the movies. The truth is, even in this day & age where we are addicted to our cell phones, Twitter, and Facebook it still feels taboo to admit that you are/were an online dater.

Back when I met Chris, Match allowed you to "connect" with the other person so long as one of you had a paid account. He did, I didn't. Nowadays, I understand that you both have to have paid accounts to connect. #whatsupwiththat

After talking online for a few weeks (I wish I had those transcripts!) He invited himself along to a Christmas party I was going to in downtown LA. I let him pick me up at my house & broke rule #1 of online dating: Always meet somewhere neutral. Maybe that's why,
Or maybe it's because we were both out of our element. The party turned out to be a hipster-artsy-photographing-rooftop-affair. Talk about awkward. He did take me to play a game of pool after the party, which somewhat balanced the terrible first half.

I didn't think I'd ever hear from him again, until he called, the very next day, asking to take me out on a real date. And then the next day, and the next. It was that sweet 'getting to know you' period of talks that last till 5am and that first {foot-popping} kiss.

I loved his confidence, that he knew what he wanted out of life, and that he lived a life of faith. Surprisingly, after our first date, we rarely talked online. It very quickly turned into a real-life relationship.
All because of a little website called match.com. The moral of this story is: You can find real love online. In fact, I recommend it.

You are one of several friends I have who's met their spouse/significant other online. I wish I'd had that kind of luck on the dating sites I've tried! I tried match, eharmony, and some christian and church-related sites - no luck. I have met plenty of the oddballs who give online dating a bad name to begin with, but never anyone I wanted to see again. I believe it works because I keep hearing and seeing examples of it but I think there must be some kind of magic I'm missing out on!

Aw, this is such a beautiful story! It's a shame that online dating has such a bad rap and that a lot of times people are embarrassed to say they met their significant other through it. I see it sort of like how we're all blogging buddies... sometimes you have to go out into the (online) world to find the people who love the same things you do.

I've tried a bit of online dating in the past, but never to any luck. I don't discount the finding people that I connect with - the best dates I've ever been on were with people I met online - but I also tend to wind up with the losers that string you along as someone "on the side" because apparently to 20-something dudes, online dating = gettin' some. :P Harumph. Ah well, my time will come eventually. Until then, I'll bask in lovely stories like yours. :)

Thanks so much for sharing your story! It is really sweet and you and your hubby make a fantastic couple from what I can see.

I think times are changing and things are shifting and it is difficult to meet people (hence my brief flirtation with speed dating) ... you are a very lucky lady and at the end of the day, the most important thing is that you found each other in a crazy world where it is so hard to meet people whose fundamental beliefs are the same as ours.

Have a fantastic weekend and a wonderful wedding anniversary!

Hah I embrace the geekiness! :) I met my husband online too, not even on a dating site, it was on IRC. Does anyone even use IRC anymore? Anyways, we both were in a chat room devoted to a band, we chatted for a while, became friends, he visited me in Montreal, I visited him in upper New York state. Eventually engaged, and now married 13.5 years.

I met my boyfriend on OK Cupid! At first I was worried about how people would perceive our relationship knowing we met online, but I can honestly say I have a happier, healthier relationship (2.5 years now!) than a lot of my friends who met their significant other through more traditional routes.

I always tell people that if you're going to do online dating you have to be prepared to be 100% honest about who you are and what you want. It gives you the best possible chance for success!

I met my husband online too!! We actually met playing an online game... but I recommend meeting online too! It's a lot better to get to know someone through emails and a few phone calls than meeting a drunk guy at a bar. LOL!

P.S. I absolutely LOVE your new blog design- GO GIRL!!!!

Love your story of how you meet your hubby! Yes online dating is how so many people meet now. I think people are a lot less skeptical now than when this first came on the scene. I have at least 2 friends who meet their significant others online.

So cute!! My husband and I met online too. We talked and skyped for about 2 months before I would even meet him. By the time we met, I already felt like I knew he was the one. Our first date was awkward because we knew each other in a mental way but not in a physical way... you know like we didn't know each others' mannerisms and stuff, but we knew each others' thoughts kinda? Anyways, we lied to our families at first because we were afraid they would disapprove, but it came out later right before we got married. haha

I know plenty of people that met online. No shame! You have a lovely meeting story. I always find it more romantic, for some reason, when a couple starts off on a bad foot...is that weird? Maybe a little Pride & Prejudice romance. LOL Thanks for sharing. This was really sweet.
